Week 4 of Elle’s Journey into Spring Series

I Abstract water drop. colors orange, gray, and blues. Invokes a sense of action.I was thinking of you all as I took my walk, listening to the melt working it’s way through the culverts on the sides of the road. Between the snow melting, the mist in the air, and the intermittent rain, water has been my constant companion today.

Water can be a cooling element to work with when the fire gets too intense. It is the cleansing of springtime. It is also heavily associated with emotions and can bring relief when we’ve bottled them up. Part of our work as humans is learning to navigate our own emotional flow.

Water is perhaps the most mutable of the elements to work with, it can quench our thirst, cool our heat, be as magical as a drop of dew, or as powerful and patient as a  river carving our landscape.

On the mat we’ll be inviting awareness of our emotions during our practice, playing with the concept of flow; when we can direct it, and when we are along for the ride. We’ll also work with a few different meditations to invoke this important element.

I am going to try and pay attention to the spring. I am going to look around at all the flowers, and look up at the hectic trees. I am going to close my eyes and listen.
―Anne Lamott

Spring MandalaHappy Spring!

Especially when life feels like it gets busier, it’s important to take time to slow down and listen to ourselves. Ironically, in slowing down and paying attention we experience more of life.

One great way to slow down and listen is by attending Restorative Yoga and Yoga Nidra with April. It’s coming up this Sunday at 6pm.

I also want to draw your attention to the Mini Retreat I’m offering in May. If you often feel like an hour practice just isn’t enough time to go as deep as you want into your practice, or you wish that you didn’t have to choose between attending a gentle class which opens you up or a Forrest Inspired class which warms you up and develops strength, then this is for you. More information below.

Hope to see you on the mat soon!

Grounding our Inspiration

Last week we connected with the element Air by inviting in our inspiration and paying attention to the unseen forces in our lives. We also celebrated the Vernal equinox and the full moon.

This week we will work with the energy of Earth and grounding. This is somewhat of a surprise to me, as in my original lesson plan we were moving from Air to Fire using the inspiration to stoke our flames. As I have been working on my lessons plans this weekend, that felt… well, ungrounded. So I have been inspired to change course. What is that saying? You can’t control the wind but you can adjust your sails!

I look forward to prating with you, let me know if you have any questions.

Much Love,

Elle

Week 2 of Journey into Spring: The Element Air

The most obvious connection between Air and yoga is breath, and in the past, if I’ve brought this element into my classes, it’s as pranayama. However, when we unpack the symbolism of the element Air there is so much more there. And since our practice focuses on breath to begin with, I thought it was about time to get a bit more creative.

Air is associated with Spring, change, transformation (winds of change); it can be chaotic and admittedly feel ungrounded. It is associated with mental energy, ideas, and inspiration.

Last week we concentrated on beginning, setting intentions, looking within to connect with inner longing and yearning, this week we’ll be connecting with some powerful energy to help us toward our destinations. While we can’t control the energy of the wind, we can choose how we adjust our sails.

Set Intentions and Begin (Again)

This week we will begin our Journey into Spring Series and all of my classes will have themes around Intentions and Beginning (Again).

It can be a challenge to bring a beginner’s mind to a practice you do regularly. Heck, part of the inspiration for this series was finding a way for me to organize my own practice and my teaching in a different way. I invite you to join me and be intentional about bringing a beginner’s openness back into your practice.

Here are a few questions that might help:

  • What assumptions do you bring to the mat and why? For instance, if you always opt out of a pose and do your own thing, what’s behind these choices? Are there health reasons, or are you perhaps limiting yourself?
  • When was the last time you felt inspired on the mat? What did that feel like? See if you can remember where in your body you felt inspired.
  • What are things you love about your current practice?
  • When does your practice get challenging?

On Monday and Wednesday you’ll have opportunities to set your own goals for yourself for the next 10 weeks. I’ll hand out cards for you to write them on; these are just for you. Bring them to class, set them up under your mat, keep them with you.

I invite you to use the opportunity to think about your life off your mat as well. What are the things you are passionate about drawing into your life?Where are areas that need some extra energy? Are there areas you are looking to transform? There’s a sanskrit word, sankulpa, which translates as “inner resolve.” While we can resolve to work towards anything we think we want, I have found it’s most effective to combine this with getting to know ourselves and learning to listen to what our hearts yearning. Friday and Saturday classes will end with guided meditations that can be helpful to form one’s own sankulpa.

Infinity News for week of March 11th

As is your desire so is your intention. As is your intention so is your will. As is your will so is your deed. As is your deed so is your destiny.
―Deepak Chopra

It might not be spring yet outside, but at Infinity Studio we’re already beginning to celebrate with a number of free offerings. Not only are we hoping to lure some hibernating yogis out of their cozy caves but we want those of  you who show up for class every week — sometimes several times a week — to know much we appreciate practicing with you. So these classes are on us. We love you!

You’ll also want to consult the schedule for a few changes this week. Lynn is traveling and won’t lead her Wednesday and Friday classes. Alanna is also taking the week off, her next session starts March 21st.

Tell me, what is it you plan to do
with your one wild and precious life?
― Mary Oliver

The days are getting a bit longer and brighter and many of us are looking forward to spring. I’ve noticed a slew of posts lately about spring cleaning and beginning again, clearing out clutter. While at the same time the snow still covers us, and many of feel like we’re not quite ready to be done hibernating.

At infinity things are beginning to shift. We have some series coming to an end and some new ones starting.  Mollee’s last Candlelight Class is this Wednesday. I hope lots of you will show up.

The love continues this week, and every week here at Infinity!

If you’re looking for a way to show your love and appreciation to our teachers, show up for some very very special series that are coming to a close!

Erin Drummond’s series ends on Feb 25th. Eri’s SomaYoga series ends Feb 27th. The last Candlelight Class is on March 6th, appropriately themed Opening to Change. If you can’t make it but still want to let these teachers know how much you love and appreciate them, I will pass on any messages that come through Infinity.

In the case of the Monday evening class I will resume teaching again this week, and it will be part of the Yoga Journey I’m leading my students through this spring. For those attending regularly, this will culminate in a Forrest Inspired Mini Retreat! I can’t tell you how much I’m looking forward to this!

I also want to call your attention to a free lecture series hosted by Infinity practitioners. The next one is coming up on Thursday Feb 21st: Go with Your Gut by Dr. Kristin Noble.

Yoga Journey and Forrest Inspired Mini Retreat

Yoga Journey
Beginning the first week in March each week’s themes will be centered around Forrest Yoga concepts including bringing elements from the 4 directions into our practice. It’s a way for me to share with my students in a deeper way some of the healing practices of Forrest Yoga. You don’t have to do anything special, just continue to attend classes regularly.

My Saturday morning classes will continue to be Gentle Yoga classes but we will be along for the journey as well. These  are more meditative by nature which makes them the perfect time to explore deeper aspects of healing practices.

Forrest Inspired Mini-Retreat
Our journey will culminate in an opportunity for a longer practice. We’ll begin with a decadent warm up and have a chance to go deeper into our practice as well as spend longer in meditation.

Since this is for my students, I would love your input. If you are interested in participating in something like this, please fill out this doodle and let me know when you would be able to attend.

If you’re not able to attend at least once a week but still want to attend the mini-retreat, please talk to me about it. If you’ve been a regular student of Jen’s in the past and are familiar with Forrest Yoga but can’t make my regular classes, I’d love to see you!

When: To be determined. Please fill out this doodle if you’re interested in attending.
Cost: $30 early bird, $40 at the door.

Weather Related Cancelations

Infinity Office is closed tomorrow and there will be no Lunchtime Gentle Yoga. As of right now Hailey is still planning on holding class but make sure to check back if the roads are iffy tomorrow evening.

Be safe and take care of yourself!

4 Questions with Infinity Yoga Teacher Mollee Sheehan

Mollee Sheehan answers questions about herself and her teaching style. Read on for Mollee in her own words!

1.  What is your teaching philosophy?

white water lilly flower

My short answer: Ancient + Modern.

I have a deep reverence for the ancient intentions of yoga as a path for self-realization and transcending human suffering.

I also make space for modern science and the ability of yoga to heal modern-day suffering — chronic stress, distraction and disconnection, and its impacts like anxiety, attention issues, and depression.

2.  What are your classes like?

By holding close to yoga’s ancient roots, the yoga I teach might not look like yoga often practiced in America today. The word yoga translates to union. I focus on supporting union of breath and movement, of body, mind and spirit. And building and strengthening not just the body but our relationship with ourselves, the outer and inner.

A student once said, “Your class didn’t seem like yoga. Yoga is so difficult and puts your body in all kinds of uncomfortable positions. Your class felt different. I feel so good! I feel so calm! What did you do?” My first thought: I was doing yoga!

The word for yoga postures, asana, is defined as a “steady, comfortable posture.” I guide students to find comfort and steadiness — physically and mentally. It’s rewarding to see tension soften when they are given permission to be themselves and let go of the struggle to “perform” a pose or look a certain way. The result is greater ease in mind and body.

3.  What is your teaching background and style?

I bring trauma-informed principles to every class I teach — whether teaching to the general population or leading healing-focused series.

That isn’t how I started. In the late 90s, I was a fitness instructor at the YMCA when yoga was beginning to gain popularity in the fitness world. So to my kickboxing and step aerobic repertoire I added fitness-style yoga as a physical fitness tool.

I eventually found my way to Iyengar Yoga, which taught me alignment and introduced me to the idea that yoga was much more than physical postures — that there were eight limbs of yoga, and physical practice was only one. I was intrigued at first Om. 😉

I taught at the Y until 2005 or so when career and family took priority. I left teaching but continued practicing and learning.

A few years ago, I experienced an extremely traumatic event I didn’t think I’d come back from. I haven’t yet. Not completely. I’ve made tremendous progress but am still healing.

The most significant therapy I experienced on my recovery path from PTSD is trauma-informed yoga. It’s saved my life, and I felt inspired to share this powerful healing tool with others.

I enrolled in a 200-hour yoga teacher certification program to develop my teaching, and became certified to lead trauma-informed yoga.

I’m continuing on the therapeutic yoga track and am finishing my 500-hour and Yoga Therapy training. I’m also completing Ayurveda and holistic wellness counseling training — that applies the tools of yoga, Ayurveda and modern psychology to support healing and thriving through one-on-one and group work.

4. Why do you teach yoga?

As a dedicated student, I’m continuously learning and evolving my understanding of this rich practice; the classes I teach shift and evolve along with me. I enjoy being on this journey alongside those who join me. We’re exploring and growing together.

Yoga has been one of the greatest gifts and healers in my life. I am honored to share it with anyone and everyone!
